Do You Need a Data Protection Officer (DPO)?
Under the GDPR, every organization processing personal data should assign responsibility for data protection and privacy compliance. However, appointing a formal DPO is only mandatory if your organization:
public authority or public body;
conducts large-scale, regular and systematic monitoring of individuals as a core activity;
processes special categories of personal data (such as health or biometric data) or criminal conviction data on a large scale as a core activity.
Not required to appoint a DPO yet?
If you're an early-stage startup or your business processes only limited amounts of personal data, you may not be legally required to appoint a DPO today. That doesn't mean privacy should wait.
Building privacy into your products and processes from the beginning is significantly easier and more cost-effective than fixing compliance gaps later. AlfaDPO provides free guides, practical tools, templates to help you adopt Privacy by Design from day one and prepare for future growth.
